Bright Future

(2003, Kiyoshi Kurosawa)

I watched this movie long ago and I remember not liking it so much. At that time I was obsessed with Tadanobu Asano and I was disappointed that his role in the movie was short. But I gave it another chance recently and now I love the movie! I was too young to understand it back then. The movie is about these guys that are confused about the role of work in their lives but have found purpose through a poisonous jellyfish that Asano keeps as a pet. The plot starts to get boring in the second half but I perked right up when the jellyfish shows up again. It’s hard to explain why it excited me, maybe just the music. The jellyfish itself is not too important, I think it’s just something shiny and alluring that keeps these men motivated to live.
