Maborosi

(1995, Hirokazu Koreeda)

A woman’s husband (Tadanobu Asano) dies unexpectedly (and maybe intentionally) and now as a widow, she agrees to an arrange marriage shortly after. This is a pretty powerful movie about loss. The first 20 minutes is pretty simple and shows her happily living life. The remainder show her living like a zombie, repressing thoughts of her late husband. At first, I thought the last half of the movie was dull but the ending made sense of it all. I cried pretty hard, the emotions struck close to home.
