中国の奇妙な官僚制度の実態を知ることができるだけでなく、中国文化のさまざまなニュアンスに触れられる入門編としても最高の一作だ。物語の核となる「潘金蓮」は、夫以外の男と関係を持ち、夫を殺す女を描いた古典的な物語であり、「悪い女」と見なされる女性の代名詞として使われてきた。
