この映画自体も一見すると虚しさを感じさせるが、それ自体が、現代中国での暮らしはどこか虚しいが、それでも若者たちはそのなかでなんとか楽しみを見出そうとしていることを強調するためだろう。象徴的なのが、バス停で二人の女の子がノーカットで3分間踊り続けるシーンである。カメラがゆっくりと彼女たちに近づくにつれ、音楽は次第に遠のいていく。
